In the new film The Man From U.N.C.L.E., most of the attention paid to the movie surrounds its two male leads, Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. The two frustratingly handsome men portray rival spies from the United States and Russia, who are forced to work together to prevent a global catastrophe. But despite the charisma and charm their two characters bring to the screen, the key to the film may very well be Gaby Teller, the daughter of a missing German scientist who provides the only known link to stopping the bad guys. Given that it's such an important role, you're probably wondering what actress was tasked with playing the part. So, who plays Gaby in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ?
Alicia Vikander plays Gaby in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and if you don't know her name yet, you will soon. Vikander is a 26-year-old Swedish actress who already has a couple of big films to her her credit in 2015 before The Man From U.N.C.L.E. even hits theaters. Her performance as the seductive and scary robot Ava in the surprise hit Ex-Machina earlier this year established her as having serious star potential in Hollywood, and her role opposite a wig-wearing Kit Harington in Testament of Youth in June further cemented her reputation as one of the best young actresses around. And even though she's already been making waves this year, Vikander is not even close to being finished. She still has a whopping four films left to be released in 2015, and is already working on a huge film for next year. So get familiar with Alicia Vikander because you're going to be seeing her name a lot in the coming months. Here's where.
Burnt
Starring Bradley Cooper as a super intense chef, the movie only has Vikander appear in two scenes. Still, she told Dispatch that they're, "very cool and quite feisty." She'll be sharing the scene with plenty of talent, as the film also stars Sienna Miller, Jamie Dornan, and Uma Thurman. Burnt arrives in theaters on Oct. 23.
The Danish Girl
Next up for Vikander is a film that's sure to bring a lot of attention. In The Danish Girl, Vikander stars as Gerda Wegener, the wife of transgender artist Lili Elbe, who's played by Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne. Redmayne's performance is highly-anticipated, but, I wouldn't be surprised if Vikander steals the show. The Danish Girl bows on Nov. 27.
Tulip Fever
Based on the Deborah Moggach novel of the same name, the movie features Vikander as a married woman who has an affair with a man who was hired to paint her portrait. The two scheme to make a fortune off of some of that sweet, sweet tulip money so they can run away together (tulips were big in 17th century Amsterdam). Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz co-stars as her husband, and fellow "It Girl" Cara Delevingne also appears. The film screened at Cannes Film Festival this year, and is expected to debut in the U.S. in the fall.
The Light Between Oceans
Another adaptation of a popular novel, and another lead role for Vikander. This time, she's starring alongside possible real life boyfriend Michael Fassbender as a woman who, with her lighthouse-attendant husband, finds an abandoned baby in a rowboat and decide to raise it as their own. The movie is based on M.L. Stedman's novel of the same name, and is expected in theaters sometime before the end of the year.
Untitled Jason Bourne Sequel
Not much is known about the next installment in the Bourne series other than the facts that Vikander is in it and Matt Damon is returning to the franchise after a nine year hiatus. But really, what else do you need to know? Bourne is slated for release on July 29, 2016.
So much Vikander to look forward to — The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is just the start.
